At a Glance . . .
● We operate a large oil sand mine, utilities plant, bitumen extraction plant and upgrading facility that processes bitumen and produces value-added light, sweet crude oil for domestic consumption and export. We call our product Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB).
● In 2005, we produced 78.1 million barrels of Syncrude Sweet Blend.
● We are currently nearing completion of construction of our multi-staged expansion called Syncrude 21 that will see our total daily production increase to around 350,000 barrels of Syncrude Sweet Premium, a lower sulphur and nitrogen product with a higher smoke point and cetane number. Further expansion is being contemplated.
● Our operations provide jobs for 14,000 people directly and indirectly across Canada.
● We are the largest industrial employer of Aboriginal people in Canada. Aboriginals make up 9.2% of our employee workforce. In 2005, a record $134 million in business was conducted with Aboriginal businesses in our region.
● Syncrude is one of the largest private sector employers in Alberta, employing more than 4,300 people directly and an average of 1,000-1,500 maintenance contractor employees.
● On behalf of our Owners, we spend more than $40 million annually on research and development. We also operate one of the largest private-sector research programs in Western Canada and are one of the top 50 R & D spenders in Canada.
● The Syncrude Project results in substantial returns to the people of Canada and Alberta, including royalty payments, and federal and provincial taxes, exceeding $5 billion to date.
● In excess of $1 billion is spent annually on purchased goods, services and salaries – of which 90 percent is spent in Alberta – on regular plant operations alone..
● Our corporate headquarters are located in the city of Fort McMurray, 440 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. Our Mildred Lake facility is 40 kilometres north of the city, with our Aurora project located an additional 35 kilometres north of Mildred Lake. Our operations are found on the Athabasca Oil Sands Deposit.
